Subject History
Abandoned by his parents before he could even remember them, Mortimer was raised in an orphanage that brutally bullied and mocked him for his mutant appearence, to the point of scarring him psychologically and driving him to develop a subserviant and meek personality, willing to blindly obey anyone he thought cared about him. Contacted by the mutant terrorist Magneto, he was given the moniker of Toad and fooled into thinking that the extremist cared for him, when in reality Magneto saw him as nothing more than a worthless pawn. Mortimer blinded himself to the verbal and even physical abuse Magneto put him through out of devotion and hope that Magneto would rid the world of those who had been so cruel to him. Toad would clash with the X men a multitude of times under Magneto's employ, as well as developing an unreciprocated crush on his daughter The Scarlet Witch.
Eventually, Magneto and Toad would be captured by an alien called The Stranger and imprisoned on an alien planet. When Magneto escaped he carelessly ditched Toad behind, causing Mortimer to realize just how little he cared. This combined with the constant abuse Magneto inflicted upon him when they met up again led to Toad's admiration to turn into murderous hatred, leaving Magneto to die like he had Toad out of bitter resentment.
Later captured along Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver by the warrior Arkon, Toad chose to stay behind as the latter two were rescued by The Avengers, using the alien tech to build a spaceship that allowed him to travel the cosmos and return to The Stranger's planet. Having nothing else to focus on but his crush on Wanda, Toad would master The Stranger's tech and equipment to try and impress her with his newfound power. He was too late however, finding out that she had already married the Avenger known as Vision during his absence. Struck with rage and grief at his last ounce of hope taken from him, Toad lashed out at the Avengers before being defeated.
After serving his short prison sentence, Toad purchased an abandoned castle in upstate New York and had it outfitted with a series of death traps, dubbing himself "The Terrible Toad King" as he planned to imprison everyone who ever abused and tormented him in the castle to die for his amusement. First kidnapping the X Man known as Angel, accidentally bringing The Thing alongside him, the two heroes escaped as Arcade demanded payment for his services the panicked Toad would be saved by Angel, who converted the castle into an amusement park to pay the debt to Arcade out of pity. Unfortunately this castle was ACTUALLY owned by Dr Doom, who sent a robot of himself to forcibly evict Toad and return the castle back to it's original state.
Fallen into depression and despair once again, Mortimer attempted to commit suicide but was interrupted by Spiderman, who offered his friendship to Toad in hopes of lifting his spirits. However, after receiving the first act of kindness since Magneto, Toad became obsessed with becoming Spiderman's new partner, much to the web head's reluctance. Trying to convince Spiderman he could be a good partner, Toad hired a group of goons to attack Spiderman so he could save the day. The plan worked, as he saved the day alongside other hopeful partners Frog Man and Spider Kid, as the trio decided to band together as a team called the misfits.
However Toynbee was still obsessed with his crush on Scarlet Witch, trying to seek help from a psychiatrist but giving into his darker impulses and using The Stranger's technology to try and kidnap Scarlet Witch, but was foiled by Vision, Quicksilver, and the now reformed Magneto, being sent to project P.E.G.A.S.U.S to be studied alongside the robots he had made for the attack.
Toad would break out with the help of his robots and built an exoskeleton which defeated Vision and Spider-Man as he made his way to Scarlet Witch and Vison's home to confront her. However being repulsed by her eight months pregnant appearence, he was soundly defeated by his former crush yet escaped.
Forming a new brotherhood of evil mutants under his own leadership, and allying himself with The Morlocks, they would clash with X-Force, and even the heroes Darkhwak and Sleepwalker before being disbanded.
Lost and alone, Toad would be taken in by Emma Frost who had taken pity on him, though clashed with her students due to a misunderstanding where they thought he had broken in.
Eventually in another clash with The Stranger, Toad's genetic structure was revealed to have been an unfinished mutation, which was corrected to make him taller, slimmer, and more powerful. Helping the other captured mutants defeat the stranger, Toad would once again venture off on his own. Though he did turn up to pay respects to his former master Magneto upon his supposed death in the genocide of Genosha.
After Scarlet Witch woped out a majority of the world's mutant powers, Toad was one of the lucky handful to retain his abilities, trying to take advantage of the Utopian conflict before being stopped by Iceman, and later losing a finger in a fight against Nimrod. Feeling like an outcast even in Utopia, Toad would enlist at the newly built X mansion as their janitor, taking pride in cleaning the school and reprimanding misbehaving students, even if nobody actually acknowledged his efforts. Seeing Quentin Quire get knocked out mid air by the phoenix force, Toad leapt into action and sprung across several buildings to catch the falling student and bring him to a safe landing. Trying to avoid attention out of fear of being scolded and reprimanded as he had grown accustomed to, he was instead showered in praise by Husk, and told he was quite brave.
He began to date Husk, who encouraged him to move from the X Institute to the Hellfire academy. Thinking he would finally be able to teach and make a difference, he was instead relegated to janitorial work once more. Finding out the school was corrupt and brainwashed, Toad would help Quentin Quire escape as the two got into a battle with the students and staff, including Husk. Pummeled by his Gf as he refused to fight her, he eventually gave in fought back until she regained her senses, but forgot their relationship in the process. He returned to the X Instute where he was treated with scorn and distrust once more. Husk attempted to rekindle the romance but Toad was afraid she'd see him as beneath her and left.
Eventually rejoining the X Men, Toad seemed to be genuinely happy for once in his life, but it was cut short by Cyclops starting a war against the inhumans and starting a Magneto-esque campaign that resulted in him killing professor X, the school shutting down and Cyclops being arrested. Sinking further into a spiral of misery, becoming an alcoholic and residing in a run down hotel, Toad found out that a version of Cyclops from the past had been brought to the present through an accident. Believing that if he killed Young Cyclops that all the atrocities that Cyclops had done would cease to exist. He knew it was horrible and was wracked up over it, but believed it was the only way to fix the world. Scott would be injured in the clash to the point Toad presumed he was dead, but the teen was just comatose. Horrified that nothing had changed, the guilt wracked Toad fled and isolated himself once more.
When Hydra rewrote the world in their image, Toad came out of hiding as part of a strike team lead by the mutant nation of New Tian, fighting to help restore the world against the reality warping forces. He would later be assigned a mission alongside Mystique and Sabretooth to help the newly revived Professor X, though was forced to leave Sabretooth behind to be arrested upon The Fantastic Four's interruption.
Subject Interview
"Come on man, just lemme in!" groaned Mortimer, currently being barred entry from the local pub by a rather burly looking bouncer. Clawing at his shirt in a desperate attempt to paw past him, Toad found himself shoved backwards onto the ground, dunked facefirst into a puddle.
"Beat it freak! Every time we let you in here, you stink up the place and drive away the other customers! Especially with your constant blubbering of "Magneto this, X men that, Spiderman whatzit" It's grating!" Huffed the burly bouncer, blocking the door with a loathsome glare towards the miserable mutant.
"Oh come on Drew, you let Marv in here last week, and he left the bar smelling like the city dump. So long as he pays his tab, what's the big deal." came his knight in shining armor, a beautiful woman with long flowing blonde locks, dressed to impress in a stunning red dress that glittered like the night stars.
A frustrated snort exiting the bouncer's nostrils, he stepped aside to let the woman in, a stunned Toad hopping in after her with eager glee! Crouching down upon a nearby stool, Mortimer began to waste away the night hours, guzzling down bottle after bottle in an attempt to forget it all. His past. His present. Hell even his future was likely just full of more misery and regret. By the end of it, Mort was so sloshed he barely noticed the lady from before starting to head out the door.
Dropping a wad of cash onto the table, Toad rushed his way out the door to see the woman walking alone through the night. This was bad. Very bad. This part of town was known for the seedy and dangerous individuals prowling the night. He had to see her home, it was the least he could do for her kindness! Bounding into the air, Mortimer made his way up onto the roof of the nearest building, gazing down at his damsel like a watchful guard.
Leaping from one building to another, Toad followed the kind stranger down her nightly walk before a trio of thugs began to approach her from a nearby ally. Two with bats, one with what seemed to be a jagged knife.
Leaping down, Morty bounced between a couple walls to build momentum as he crashed into the side of the one carrying the knife, a powerful kick sending him flying into a nearby dumpster! The other two almost instantly went to batter him with their bats, but compared to Wolverine's claws or Gambit's staff this was child's play. Using the momentum from his kick onto the leader, Toad soared backwards to avoid the strikes, spitting globs of mucus that splattered all over the wooden bats, gluing them to the ground before dissolving them away to splinters.
extending out his tongue, Toad cracked it like a whip, sending both goons crashing back into the alleyway they came from. Not likely to get up again anytime soon, thanks to both a paralyzing toxin, and from being by all odds unconscious.
"Are you alright?" He asked the girl, only to receive a batch of pepper spray to the eyes, screeching and squirming on the ground.
"Did you follow me all the way from the bar you creep?! Jeez! To think I felt sorry for you!" Chastised the woman, her uneasiness overshadowing the attempted heroics the mopey mutant had done. She fled off for her house as Mortimer sat there despondent. He should have known better. Nobody was truly kind to him. Not to Toad. The sooner he accepted that the better...
