Organic Blockage: When in her diamond form, Emma has absolutely no access to her psychic powers.
Subject History
Emma Grace Frost was born into the mercantile, multi-billion dollar Frost family in Boston, Massachusetts. She despised her abusive father, Winston; barely interacted with her substance-addicted mother, Hazel; greatly disliked her sisters, Adrienne and Cordelia; but got along with and genuinely loved her older brother, Christian. When Emma's telepathic powers manifested as a young woman, she used them to her advantage and began excelling in her academic and social lives - which were both floundering beforehand.
One of her teachers, Ian Kendall, suggested Emma study to become a teacher, which her father forbid. Emma and Ian began a romance, but after Winston found out, he quickly had Ian fired. Using her powers, Emma in turn blackmailed Winston, who was so impressed he named her his heir. This came right on the heels of Winston's move to institutionalize Christian, who he'd discovered was gay and (due to Winston's constant abuse) addicted to drugs. Emma refused the appointment and instead left to make her own way in the world.
After a period of homelessness, Emma moved in with her boyfriend, Troy. He, however, owed a large debt to a gangster and, in the ensuing scheme to try to extort the money from Winston through a fake ransom scheme, Troy was killed. Emma used the small fortune that she was left with from the tragic plan to enroll in Empire State University. While attending, Emma met fellow telepath Astrid Bloom, who became her friend and mentor. She soon learned that Astrid was using her powers to manipulate others and events and, furious, Emma telepathically attacked Astrid, leaving her comatose and absorbing her knowledge of her powers and how to use them. In this process, Emma revealed her mutation to a professor whose job she was trying to protect from Astrid's machinations and, upon discovering what she was, the professor severed all ties with her in disgust.
This deeply affected Emma and her view of humans in general, the hurt of the rejection freeing her from any moral restraint on her powers when used against them. Using her telepathy, poise, cunning drive and determination, Emma rose through the corporate world like a force of nature. She became the majority stockholder of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, which she renamed Frost International after herself. Despite her youth, Emma became chairperson of the board and CEO of the company, as well as chairperson of the board of trustees of the Massachusetts Academy, becoming its headmistress and spending a great deal of time there. This impressive rise to power and influence earned Emma an invitation to the social elite organization the Hellfire Club, where she became an exotic dancer.
Just like in other areas of her life, Emma quickly rose through the Hellfire Club, moving into the regions of their dark underbelly, the Lords Cardinal. She joined with Sebastian Shaw, who was himself a mutant, to stage a coup against the then-ruling powers, and became the White Queen after its success. Under this new rule, the Inner Circle and Hellfire Club were dominated by mutants and Emma's academy became a dark reflection of Xavier's Institute, training young mutants. The White Queen then had a series of encounters with the X-Men: trying to recruit Kitty Pryde to her school; temporarily switching bodies with the X-Man, Storm; and battling the New Mutants, who came to Kitty's aid.
Emma was then sent to manipulate Namor to join the Hellfire Club. She spent two weeks in Atlantis with him after he rescued her from a fake suicide attempt. Emma and Namor clashed with Shaw, Selene and Pierce after the former sent Sentinels to attack Atlantis, but Selene wiped all related events from Emma's memories. Next, Emma made use of the events surrounding the Beyonder to manipulate Magneto into sending most of the New Mutants to her academy for training. Ultimately, Emma's devotion to the mental health of the New Mutants outweighed her desire to retain them in her Academy, because when Magneto learned of her manipulations, rather than clash with him, she worked together with him to continue with the teenagers's therapy when they returned to the Institute.
With Magneto and the Inner Circle, Emma went to rescue Magma (who had left the Institute for the Academy previously). She and the Hellfire Club then defended Manhattan from an incursion from the demon N'Astirh before his defeat. Shaw eventually battled Magneto, claiming him unfit for the Inner Circle, but he failed. Shaw tried to convince the other Lords Cardinal to vote Magneto out, but Emma defended Magneto and Shaw was removed instead. The X-Men helped the Hellions defend the White Queen from the time-traveling Trevor Fitzroy, but the attacker managed to kill most of the Hellions, as well as put Emma into a coma, before he was subdued. Her body was kept in the med-bay of the X-Mansion during recovery.
Emma had willed the Academy to Professor Xavier, and it was added to the expanding Institute. During her coma, she inadvertently switched bodies with Iceman and, believing she was a captive of the X-Men, used his powers in ways he'd never dreamed to attempt to escape. When Emma discovered the fate of her Hellions, she had an emotional breakdown and returned to her body, believing her training to have been inadequate, and that Charles may have had the correct approach to molding young mutants. When she was recovered and out of her coma, Emma returned to the Academy alongside the X-Man Banshee and began training Generation X in accordance with and submission to the Institute. She also helped Iceman get through self-imposed mental blocks on his powers.
Following an attack by Emma's own sister, Adrienne, that ended in the White Queen killing her sister to protect her students, and the death of Synch, the Massachusetts Academy officially closed its doors. Emma moved to Genosha to continue teaching mutants but, after a massacre of the island by Sentinels, she was one of the few survivors, manifesting her diamond form secondary mutation in the process. Once rescued, Emma became a teacher at the Xavier Institute, though many resented her presence. Following the Stepford Cuckoo, Sophie's, death, her sisters blamed Emma for the loss and abandoned her. Emma offered psychic counseling to Scott Summers to help with the rift growing between him and Jean, but these sessions soon turned into a full-fledged telepathic affair.
When Jean was tipped off by the resentful Cuckoos, she tore through Emma's mind in recompense. Afterwards, Emma realized that her attraction to Cyclops had grown into genuine love on her part. She was then seemingly assassinated when Esme Cuckoo shot her with a diamond bullet while in her diamond form. Jean used the Phoenix Force to piece her back together and bring her back to life, however. Esme and Jean were killed by an attack from Xorn, disguised as Magneto, and Charles Xavier left the Institute afterward for some time to heal. Emma and Scott decided to rebuild the Institute together (unknowingly influenced and encouraged toward one another romantically by Jean's influence from the White Hot Room).
Emma then split her time between acting headmistress, alongside headmaster Scott, and being an active member of several X-Man teams - though many of her new teammates continued to distrust and dislike her. After the events of M-Day, Emma was one of the very small percentage of mutantkind to retain her powers. Cassandra Nova manipulated Emma into attacking the X-Men and trying to free her. SWORD captured the team before things could be resolved and a resident telepath confirmed that Cassandra's influence was no longer in Emma's mind. During the proceeding mission on Breakworld, Scott confessed to truly falling in love with Emma, and Emma made peace with Kitty Pryde. Emma then helped prevent a prematurely reborn Phoenix Force from corrupting Jean into Dark Phoenix by first acting as temporary host for it, then being the catalyst for all of the X-Men's love for Jean and projecting that love into her, enabling her to resist turning into Dark Phoenix and return to the White Hot Room.
She went on many adventures with the X-Men, including a clash with the Marauders, a conflict in San Francisco, and an encounter with Xavier where she used her telepathy to expose him to his many mistakes and missteps to help him move forward with his life toward a productive and noble direction. During the Secret Invasion of the Skrulls, Emma combatted their telepaths to break down the psi-blockade they'd put in place around the earth almost single-handed. With Norman Osborn's dark reign, Emma joined his Cabal as part of a master plan of Scott's. Meeting with Namor, who as another member of the Cabal, restored Emma's memories of their first meeting. She struck a deal with him that he would defend and ally with mutantkind as his own people if she helped him kill Shaw. Namor agreed and Emma used her telepathy to make it appear as though she did, in fact, kill Shaw, when in reality she locked him in the Brig of Graymalkin Industries for crimes against mutantkind.
Emma began leading the Dark X-Men at Osborn's behest to combat the mutant riots going on in San Francisco. She discovered that Xavier and Beast were prisoners of Osborn's, and that his manipulations and deceit against Emma were great. Her true motives and intents were revealed when she betrayed her team during a fight against X-Force, showing that Emma had been undermining Osborn's agenda from the start, and her playacting had allowed all mutant prisoners of his and Dark Beast's to be spirited away. Emma reunited with Cyclops and the X-Men on their mobile, artificial island haven, Utopia. She personally freed Xavier, but a portion of the Void entered her from the Sentry's mind, forcing her to remain in her diamond form to keep it from growing. Scott managed to enter Emma's mind, though, and seal the Void away again, saving her.
Selene had her underlings attack Utopia, resulting in the death of Onyxx and Diamond Lil. Recognizing her attempt to ascend to godhood, Emma dispatched X-Force to Necrosha to deal with the threat through lethal means. Emma later, following the return of Hope Summers, took Sebastian Shaw to China and wiped his memories. During the Serpent's attack on Midgard, Emma was infected by his fear after refusing Namor's continued romantic advances, but he snapped her out of the spell before she could act on the mystical influence. Next came the schism that cleft the X-Men in two. Emma wanted to side with Wolverine to pursue her true passion of teaching, but Scott begged her to stay, and she agreed. During her first mission with the Extinction Team, Emma lost her arm while in diamond form and was stuck in that state until it was reattached.
With the impending return of the Phoenix Force, Emma sided with her fellow X-Men to defend Hope Summers from the Avengers. During the ensuing fighting, on the moon, the Force was interrupted from making Hope its host and instead turned Emma, Colossus, Magik, Cyclops and Namor into its avatars by splitting its power into fifths. Together, they began remaking the world and fighting the Avengers whenever they appeared. With the defeat of the other avatars, Emma's portion of the Phoenix Force kept growing, however, and became more than she could control, direly harming her psyche. Cyclops realized he'd need the full Force to defeat the Avengers and "rescue" Hope and brutally took Emma's portion. Scott was corrupted by this, becoming Dark Phoenix, and as such killed Professor Xavier before Hope Summers and Wanda Maximoff defeated him. Emma was then taken into custody for her part in the events and incarcerated in San Francisco.
Scott and Magneto freed Emma during a transfer from one prison to another. Emma was still furious with Scott and wanted nothing whatsoever to do with him, unable to access her telepathy after the Phoenix Force. Between a rock and a hard place with her depowered and fugitive status, Emma reluctantly agreed to stay with them and began rescuing captive mutants. This team of X-Men went on many missions together. When a distress call came from Muir Island, they went to investigate. One of the Terrigen Clouds released by King Black Bolt of the Inhumans was, in fact, lethal to mutants, having swept over the Island and killed any of them that it came into contact with. Upon their arrival, Scott was exposed to the cloud and died in Emma's arms. Struck by grief, she resolved to give Cyclops a much more meaningful death.
Emma created a mental projection of Scott and, using him as a puppet and figurehead, put together a plan to destroy the clouds. She succeeded in dispersing one of the clouds, but was then confronted by the Inhumans. Emma had her projection of Scott confront Black Bolt and "die" by his hand, making Cyclops a martyr. Storm negotiated a truce with the Inhumans. Emma only shared the truth of Scott's demise with his brother, Havok. Driven by grief and anger at the Inhumans for Scott's death, Emma riled up the X-Men to combat them needlessly as a distraction so they could destroy the remaining Terrigen Cloud before it could assimilate with the atmosphere and make earth uninhabitable for mutants. Even after Queen Medusa dispersed the cloud after hearing this truth, Emma tried to keep hostilities and, when the X-Men didn't cater to this desire, unleashed a brand of sentinels that targeted Inhumans in her wrath. Emma was defeated by the combined efforts of the Inhumans and X-Men, but Havok spirited her to safety at the last, feeling the interference owed to Scott.
During Hydra's overtaking of the United States, Emma was appointed the leader of the mutant nation New Tian, though she used Shen Xorn as a puppet and figurehead, concealing her true role, and secretly working against Hydra all the while. During the final days of the Hydra control, Emma and the mutants of New Tian entered the climactic battle against it, which ended in victory. During New Tian's brief existence, Emma joined a cabal alongside Havok, Miss Sinister and Bastion to create and experiment with "Mothervine," which enhanced the powers of mutants exposed to it. New Tian's dispersal didn't hinder the cabal's plans, but when Emma learned that Mothervine subjugated the will of those affected, she turned against her fellow members and worked to right the wrongs she'd perpetrated related to it. They succeeded, and Emma used Polaris to reverse a personality inversion spell on Havok, returning him to his proper, heroic self.
Emma convinced Iceman to accompany her to her family estate, where they discovered that Christian, her brother, had manifested vast mental powers. With Bobby's help, Emma reconciled with Christian and dedicated herself to helping him mind his psyche and control his abilities. After Magneto's attack, Emma convinced the X-Men to target and take out the Hellfire Club's inner circle while she pursued Sebastian Shaw. After she defeated him, Emma became the new Black King and wrested absolute control of the Hellfire Club. In a letter to the X-Men, she explained that she intended to fix the broken world of mutants in her own way, through this new medium.
Following a called-in favor from Jessica Jones revolving around her daughter, Danielle, Emma assisted the PI, uncovering the culprit as Purple Man's son, Benjamin Killgrave. Though Purple Son escaped, Jessica was ultimately successful and Emma departed, saying that Jones owed her.
Subject Interview
Emma Frost was a master of subtly. Sure, it was a pretty easy thing to master when you could flip a switch in someones, anyones brain, to turn yourself into anything, or nothing. Leaving the Hellfire Club this time around needed to be kept quiet, at least for now. The jet hummed as it moved through the sky, a peaceful environment for Emma to think about the task at hand. She had a destination, but what she would find when she got to Massachusetts would be a surprise even to her.
The snowy hills that her and Shaw had built the Massachusetts Academy in was a familiar landscape and had once been a safe haven for Emma and her students. Looking back on her time as the headmistress, on her time forming and training the Hellions, someone else might have been filled with regret. Emma, on the other hand, had come to a place in her life where guilt seemed purely irrelevant. Right or wrong, her actions were her actions and nothing could be done to correct or justify them. Her cruelty had built character in those that she'd governed, just like the character that her own father had built in her. Maybe it was a form of manipulation, forcing those that looked to her for guidance to grow up, to harden themselves, all the while preparing them for the tough life they were destined to lead. The life of a mutant, of someone hated, targeted, feared. One had to be strong in order to survive such a life, Emma knew that firsthand and those students had left her care better prepared to live, regardless of how they felt about her in the end.
The school was part of her past, buried a long time ago under the heavy snow of Massachusetts, torn down but not forgotten. She was headed towards the same coordinates she had once given for her school, the exact spot. Being the current Head of the Hellfire Club did come with it's perks, one of which was a vast amount of knowledge and lots of people who were willing to talk. The news of a new facility taking the place of her school was... odd. Probing the area with her minds eye, Emma was puzzled. She could hear the buzz of activity, almost, but upon further advances, silence. Someone blocking out telepaths? That didn't bode well for her, or any of the mutants under her protection. Any mutants at all, to be quite frank.
The reports had come from as reliable a source as any but Emma had taken it upon herself to venture out and verify what exactly was going on. The jet sped along, putting her closer and closer to the answers she was seeking. She continued to reach out with her telepathy, looking for anything other than the slightest hints of life in the area. If something so big was being hidden from her, Emma intended on finding out what, and most importantly how. Such a feat had only been accomplished by beings, or devices, of significant power and that kind of power being used to hide things from her people wasn't something Emma took to kindly. Should she have discussed her current "mission" of sorts with her counterparts in the Inner Circle? Probably. But she'd always had her secrets, and why worry the others without the proper information? Or maybe The Black King just wanted to deal with this situation, whatever it may be, in her own way.
She was close now.
The jet began to descend, she could feel the shift in it's engines as it slowed and lowered, coming in fast to the open grove that rested just beyond what had once been the Massachusetts Academy, and still nothing. She stared out the window, watching and waiting, but there seemed to be nothing noticeable, just snow covered land and trees like she had left it. Then, suddenly, her radar lit up like a Christmas tree. At the same moment that her mind reacted to the hundreds of lives that seemed to appear out of thin air, her jet met with the field that had been blocking her in the first place. Alarms sounded as the invisible field jumbled the jets programming, engines halting, systems crashing, causing the jet's careful landing to turn into a full on ordeal. Emma held onto the interior as the jet twisted and tumbled a good thirty feet to the land beneath, crashing into the ground with enough force to tear apart the earth underneath it.
Once the plane had settled, Emma Frost rose, fully aware that her aircraft was being surrounded as she gathered herself. She was open to it all, now that she had crossed that mysterious barrier, and her mind ran out of the jet, across the short bit of forest that blocked her from the rather large facility she had been warned about. Workers, guards, people that had been shielded from her powers were now there, floating around in her thoughts as she headed towards the front of the plane. "Christian, drop whatever you're doing."
