Subject History
It’s a dog eat dog world, and a young guttersnipe from South America learned this hard fact of life very early on. Young Roderick and Daniel were twins on the streets without a penny to their name, and in a frugal world pennies were the mark of a man. You’re nothing without money, money means comfort, money means power, money means fear. He wanted his name to command respect and to inspire fear, and he got his hands dirty and toiled from the ground up to make the name Kingsley. His tactics were questionable, downright ruthless. He became a powerful broker and a fashion kingpin soaring the heights from rags to riches. He was a big shot now, but it wasn’t enough. Never enough, money and fear was all that mattered and there was one man who was lucrative in both. Norman Osborn ~ The Green Goblin, a cackling nightmare who tore through Manhattan like a one man Mongol army taking whatever he wanted and shredding through competition like a warm knife to butter. Osborn had everything
The Green Goblin’s first obvious flaw was Norman’s publicly revealed identity. Kingsley chose to remedy this via brainwashed stand ins, next was the Goblin serum. Sure, it made one an impeccable specimen of human strength, but it wrought with it an intense and inescapable insanity. Kingsley has seemingly perfected the serum, removing that one flaw - or so he thinks. No voices came from injecting the serum, but perhaps he is a little deranged? Unsure as to whether or not his altered serum worked, Hobgoblin used one of his henchmen, a mook named “Lefty” as a guinea pig to fight Spider-Man. Kingsley was satisfied with the results, in spite of Lefty losing the battle and promptly used the Goblin Glider via remote to impale Lefty. Loose ends and all that. Proceeding with the Hobgoblin formula, Kingsley injected himself and began his career with a blackmailing scheme. Two of his victims included J. Jonah Jameson and Osborn’s son, Harry. Spider-Man caught wind of the scam and in a battle royale between them and Black Cat, Hobgoblin ran his van into the Hudson River and just was assumed by both adversaries that he’d drowned. This little stint was evidence enough that he was an inferior Goblin, at least physically. Sure, both he and Osborn weren’t trained fighters, but Norman’s insanity provided the sort of relentless ferocity that Roderick simply didn’t have. No, Hobgoblin was a coward, a weasel, and a survivor first and foremost. But that wasn’t a weakness in his eyes, that was a strength. Hobgoblin was far more cautious and calculating... His arsenal would now include more “puppet Hobgoblins” like poor deceased Lefty.
The next poor soul on his chopping block was Daily Bugle reporter Ned Leeds, the snoop just had to stick his nose where it didn’t belong.... Leeds had discovered Hobgoblin survived and followed Kingsley from the Hudson back to his lair. Hobgoblin discovered the pest lurking in his hideout and used a few of Osborn’s chemicals to warp Leed’s mind. Ned was manipulated into thinking he was the Hobgoblin, and sent as a stand in for Kingsley whenever Hobgoblin needed to meet up with the local mob bosses. Another red herring Kingsley used during this time was Flash Thompson, whom Roderick had planted false evidence to incriminate as the Hobgoblin. The end game of all this being to get Richard Fisk appointed as the Rose and profit off a city wide gang war. Another villain, Jason Macendale - Jack’O’Lantern accidentally foiled the Flash Thompson frame up, which spurred a long rivalry between Roderick and Jason. Struggling to maintain control of Ned, Kingsley outed Leeds’ identity causing Macendale to murder him. Working under the Kingpin Roderick has his brother Daniel posing Hobgoblin. Daniel was soon killed off by Phil Urich, hired by the Rose. With two of his patsies swiftly eliminated, Hobgoblin decided to lay low in Belize.
During Kingsley’s retirement, Macendale took up the moniker of Hobgoblin. At first it was amusing, but Macendale’s bumbling brought more investigation to who wore the Hobgoblin costume when, where, and why - forcing him out of retirement due to growing scrutiny by Leeds’ widow, Betty Brant. Kingsley murdered Macendale and reclaimed the besmirched Hobgoblin name. Brant lured Hobgoblin into a trap claiming to have evidence that Ned was never the real Hobgoblin, Spider-Man sprung into action finally unmasking Roderick Kingsley as the one true Hobgoblin. Now in prison, Hobgoblin was down but not out of the game. Norman Osborn came back, “resurrected” from the dead, and the specter of the Green Goblin took physical form. But Norman took a cue from Kingsley and was able to twist the truth and make it seem as though he was never actually the Green Goblin. Kingsley sniffed out a new scam, he knew for a fact that Norman was a Goblin, like him, and blackmailed him... Claiming to have a journal with evidence of the Goblin’s identity, Kingsley coerced Norman into breaking him out.
