Subject Attributes
Superhuman Abilities:
Spider Physiology: Despite having previously had a chitinous exo-skeleton and then, on losing it, no powers at all, Anya was repowered in the events of ‘Spider Island’, whereupon she was granted abilities very similar to those of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man, though she found herself possessed of organic webshooters. Her powers consist of the following:
Super Strength: Anya's strength is far beyond that of a normal human. While she isn't anywhere near as strong as the likes of the Hulk, she is still pretty tough, and has shown herself able to lift between 5 and 6 tonnes with relative ease.
Super Speed: Anya can move at speeds that are beyond the physical limits of the finest human athlete. She is ultimately capable of running at speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour – and likes to use it to get around the city and her campus.
Superhuman Stamina: Anya's advanced musculature produces less fatigue toxins during physical activity than an ordinary human. This allows her to exert herself physically for much longer periods of time before fatigue begins to impair her. Similarly, she is much tougher physically to humans thanks to aforementioned enhanced musculature, and can take hits from things that would snap normal fleshy beings. She still prefers not to have to.
Superhuman Agility: Anya's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are all enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. Araña is extraordinarily limber and her tendons and connective tissues are twice as elastic as the average human beings, despite their enhanced strength.
Spider Sense: Anya's reflexes are similarly enhanced and are about 10 times greater than those of an ordinary human. Much like Peter Parker, Spider-Girl has a ‘spider-sense’ which furthers her impressive reflexes, her body seeming to naturally sense danger right before it occurs, allowing her to react before getting too badly hurt.
Wall-Crawling: Anya has the ability to mentally control the flux of interatomic attraction (electrostatic force) between molecular boundaries. This can affect the attraction between surfaces and allow Spider-Girl to 'stick' to walls. Thus far, it seems limited to Anya's body (especially concentrated in her hands and feet) and another object, with an upper limit of several tons per finger.
Enhanced Equilibrium: Spider-Girl possesses the ability to achieve a state of perfect equilibrium in any position imaginable. She seems able to adjust her position by instinct, which enables her to balance herself on virtually any object, no matter how small or narrow.
Webbing: Anya has the ability to organically produce her own silk webbing from glands within her forearms, limited by her body's health and nutrition. The silk is released through a spinneret near each wrist containing a central web spigot orifice used for web-slinging and drag lines, supplemented by several radial minor spigots for other types of webs connected to specialized glands. With them, she is able to stick to walls, fire 'web shots' , and weave more natural spider's webs.
Standard Abilities:
Natural Gymnast: Anya has always been a naturally talented gymnast, trained from a young age, sent to classes by her father to keep her 'out' of trouble when not in school. Showing a natural aptitude, it is something she enjoys and is greatly skilled in. It is perhaps her most obvious talent, and due to her extensive lessons, she is remarkably quick, agile and flexible. This skill is only furthered by her 'Spider-Girl' powers, enabling her to bend her body in a wide variety of ways and pull off stunningly agile feats that most would find impossible.
Quick Thinker: Anya has always had a knack for thinking on her feet, and years of dealing with trouble at school have left her already agile mind adept at adapting to situations at speed. She always seems to have a plan, no matter what predicament she is in, and she is remarkably hard to catch off guard.
Bilingual: Anya can speak both English and Spanish fluently.
Paraphernalia:
N/A
Subject Weaknesses:
Mortal: While Anya is much tougher than a human, she's in no way the strongest being in the world. Bruises, cuts and breaks are common place, and she doesn't heal all that quickly. Weapons damage her as they would anyone else. She is, easily put, mortal, and suffers all the setbacks that entails.
Relative Inexperience: Compared to many heroes operating in New York City, Anya remains relatively inexperienced, which can in turn lead her to make mistakes others may not.
Over-Protective: Many of the people closest to Anya – her father, her mother and Rikki Barnes – have lost their lives. Thus, Anya is over-protective of those she’s close to, and will risk her safety in a second should it mean saving those she deems family and friends.
Subject History
Anya Corazon was born to Gilberto and Sofia Corazon, and is of Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage. She moved to Brooklyn from Mexico with her father, an investigative reporter, following the untimely death of her mother. There, she attended Milton Summers High School. Her heroic lifee started early in her high school career, when attempting to stand up for a girl named Lynn. Confronting the older bully, Anya got into a fight, and though it was interrupted by a member of the faculty, the agreed to resume later that evening, outside of school.
Meeting the boy on a nearby bridge at the end of the day, the pair discovered a stranger being attacked by an odd group named 'The Sisterhood of the Wasp.' As the stranger was vastly outnumbered, Anya ran in to aid, and found herself on the end of a strike that would have killed the man. The stranger was revealed to be Miguel, a sorcerer of a mystic cult known as the 'Spider Society'. Recognising Anya's bravery, and believing she could be of use to the sect, Miguel transferred some of his power into her, saving her life. Because of this, Anya apparently gained a spider-shaped tattoo, enhanced strength and agility, and the power to encase her body in a blue exo-skeleton. However, Miguel later revealed they were not a gift from him or the society – his power had just unlocked her own natural potential.
Anya joined the Spider Society as a Hunter, and they provided her cover as an intern at WebCorps – the shell institution belonging to the Society. After developing her secret identity – taking the name Arana – she went on a mission to prevent the Sisterhood from empowering their own hunter. Succeeding, she continued in her fight against the sisterhood, aided by the likes of Amun (who even learned her identity.) Unfortunately, the long-standing conflict with the Sisterhood claimed Miguel's life, and following his death Anya quit WebCorps, becoming a solo heroine in her own right.
Anya was registered as a hero during the first Civil War, joining the side of the SRA. She never took part in any of the direct conflicts – as she was a trainee and tutored by Ms. Marvel. During this time, Anya's carapace was ripped off her body by the Doomsday Man, leaving her unable to utilise and rendering her near powerless. However, despite being depowered, she continued to fight crime using spider-themed gadgetry, and found solace in a firm friendship with Rikki Barnes a.k.a. Nomad.
She was later hunted by the Kravinoff Family, as they attempted to find and kill every 'spider' themed hero in the world in a hope to ressurect Kraven the Hunter. Spider-Woman, Arachne and Madame Webb were all captured alongside Anya, and Mattie unfortunately lost her life. Madame Webb found herself mortally wounded, and passed her powers on to Julia Carpenter, desperate for someone to offer guidance to Peter Parker – who was ready to kill Kraven for the damage caused. Luckily, she was able to prevent the Hunter's death at Parker's hands, and Anya took to wearing Julia Carpenter's old costume.
Alongside her friend Rikki, she joined a group known as the Young Allies, and battled the Bastards of Evil. They then teamed up with the Secret Avengers to take on Onslaught, who was eventually defeated when Nomad sacrificed herself for the greater good – leaving Anya heartbroken. However, she was unable to mourn for long, as she found herself in conflict with Arcade, teaming up with the fellow teen heroes of the Avenger's Academy (a group she would later, albeit briefly, join.)
Shortly after escaping Arcade, Anya changed her name to Spider-Girl, leaving the monicker Arana behind. She experienced further heartbreak at the loss of her father, who was killed by a rampaging Red Hulk. She was all but ready to give up on being a super-hero, but was conviniced, by her former roomate Rocky Flint, to stay strong and keep helping those in need.
She eventually tracked down the Red Hulk, who explained he had been working with Gilberto. He had been poisoned by a group known as 'Raven', which had caused the rampage and unfortunate loss of Corazon. Anya helped Hulk in tracking down Raven. It was later revealed that Susan Storm had been friends with her father for many years too, helping him in America following the move from Mexico. Anya continued operating as a heroine, tackling Ana Kravinoff, Screwball and Kurt Godwin (an agent of Raven), saving her friend Rocky from their talons.
During the events of Spider-Island, Anya, like many others, developed gifts matching those of Peter Parker. A natural with these powers, she aided the Avengers and the X-Men in taking down Spider-Man imposters in Bryant Park. She was then attacked by agents of the Sisterhood of the Wasp, and was forced to get her friend Rocky to safety. Reluctantly, Spider-Girl found herself working alongside Wilson Fisk and the Hand, who stopped Wasps from killing off civilians infected by the spider strain. However, Spider-Girl later realized that she was needed to team up with the Wasps, and slow down the Spiders, so that a cure could be found. Eventually, the Spiders were defeated, and a cure was administered to everyone in the city, including Anya. However, she retained her powers despite being "cured," suggesting she was not given the real cure or she was immune to the antidote.
Re-powered (albeit with a different powerset), Anya was recruited to the Avengers Academy, and actually worked alongside the Avengers during the 'Inhumanity' event – picked to join their new line up by Jessica Drew and Natasha Romanoff, with the former even taking her as a protege. Alongside Jessica, Anya joined the 'Spider-Army' that was assembled to protect the 'Spider-Verse', and was invaluable to their team, as she was able to decipher ancient scrolls that others couldn't, thanks to her being a 'totem' of the Spider Society.
After the Inheritors were defeated and exiled to Earth-3145, each member of the Spider-Army proceeded to return to their respective reality. After the universe of Spider-UK was revealed to had been destroyed by an Incursion, he decided to stay in Loomworld, the former base of the Inheritors, and use the Web of Life and Destiny to reach out any reality in need of a Spider-Man. Spider-Girl decided to join him, and together became the Web-Warriors.
She remained a member of this team until the events of 'Spider-Geddon', in which she allied with May Parker (Spider-Girl) and Spiderling (Anna-May Parker), and was able to once again defeat the Inheritors alongside the Spider-Army.
Subject Interview
The black sedan careened around the corner sharply, brakes screeching as they fought against the ridiculous speed the vehicle was travelling at. Were it not for the electrostatic force that allowed her to cling to near-enough any surface seamlessly, Anya Corazon was sure she'd have been catapulted from her ride, and ended up little more than a black and white spider-pancake against the wall of one of New York City's many skyscrapers. Luckily for her, she barely moved at all, swaying a little as she bit down hard on her lower lip. Then the car righted itself, and sped on; with Spider-Girl still atop it.
The chase had been a short lived one. She'd caught it a few blocks back, having heard the roar of engines and the wail of sirens on her way to class (which she was now beyond hopelessly late for...again.) She'd speed-changed – something she was getting very good at – and had been swinging through the streets in no time. One she'd got a spider-eye view of the roads below, the cause of the noise had become clear. Then, as Spider-Heroes were want to do, she dropped on to the police-pursued vehicle – and held on for dear life.
Her next task, following catching the culprit-vehicle, was to try and get it to come to a halt, without damaging public property (unlikely) or squishy civilians (the real priority.) Unfortunately, bringing said car to a halt was much harder when it moved so quickly and erratically, and the driver took corners like he was Jason Statham in 'Transporter.'
“They never make it easy and just pull over,” she muttered to herself, hauling herself forward toward the windscreen and bonnet – forced to release a hand to shoot a ball of organic webbing from her wrist's spinneret at some old, doddering civilian who'd decided to try and cross the road the criminals were haring down. Said webbing caught the grandma mid-chest, knocking her back and onto her heiny, and seconds later the car sped by – passing through the thankfully empty space she'd have been stood in were it not for Anya's interference.
The woman may have have been covered in sticky goop and she'd likely develop a killer butt-bruise; but at least she was alive. “Old Woman 1 – Impending Doom 0...though I bet when this gets reported I'm the menace for webbing the elderly.” She was certain papers wouldn't go into detail about the split second save she'd had to make, nor that Spider-Girl couldn't have saved the granny in any other way; detaching from the car, shooting a web-line and swinging to grab her from harms way taking a risky extra few seconds the lady might not have had.
With the civilian saved, Anya refocused on stopping the getaway vehicle; and continued her short journey to the car's front end. Once there, she leaned over to one side, dangling her face in front of the driver's side window, offering a tinkly wave. When the criminal caught sight of her – his eyes went wide with shock. Spider-Girl then motioned for him to wind his window down, swirling an extended finger repeatedly in a circle. Instead, he raised a pistol, pointed it in her general direction and shot.
Her enhanced danger sense and reflexes meant that the slug the weapon spat toward her came nowhere close to hitting her, Anya dodging nimbly to one side, avoiding both bullet and shattered glass. Then, in seconds, she was back at the then-open portal.
“You know, that was a slight over-reaction. I just wanted to talk...”
Another few gunshots, and another few dodges.
“F@*# off, hero!”
Anya blinked and winced, before firing web at the man's mouth, and then his gun, making sure both were unusable.
“Woah...potty mouth. You really shouldn't talk to girls like that.”
A muffled response was all she got. Thank you, webbing.
“Okay, so I'm Spider-Girl. Now introductions are out the way...I'm going to have to ask you to apply some brake. You know, slow the car down, bring it to a stop – preferably even pull over so you don't interfere with the natural flow of traffic.”
The criminal glared at her.
“Well, guy? Think you can do that?”
And then he slammed on the brakes – catching Anya completely off guard. “Oh no,” was all she managed, before being rocketed her from her position atop the hood, her body unable to match the car's complete change of momentum. Hurled forward, she bounced across concrete, narrowly avoided being hit by an exterminator's truck at a crossing, before she finally came to a crashing stop, her incredibly strong body denting the side of a metal skip.
“Ouch.”
