Gender: Female
Archetype: Super Hero
Aliases: Green Genes, Shulk, Shulkie
Marital Status: Single
Affiliation: Avengers, A-Force, Fantastic Four
Subject Attributes
Superhuman Abilities: Jennifer's prime ability originates from a genetic mutation caused entirely by exposure to intense gamma radiation; the result of a blood transfusion from Bruce Banner a.k.a The Hulk. She was later empowered further by Eson the Searcher. This mutation enables her to alter her physical form into that of a 'female hulk.' This transformation renders her much more physically imposing and powerful, adding near 9 inches to her already tall frame, and she gains in the region of 560lbs of muscle tissue. Her usually pale skin becomes a green in colour, as do her eyes and hair, although of much darker shades than her skin. Jen is able to change back and forth at will, as she suffered much less in the way of psychological trauma as a youngster. Her Hulk form grants her a number of abilities. These abilities include:
Superhuman Strength: She-Hulk has an incredibly impressive muscle structure. When calm, she has been shown to be able to lift around 50 tonnes with ease and it has been suggested that she might well be capable of lifting up to 100 tonnes. When angry or scared, this margin increases, although not to the extent of The Hulk. As She-Hulk's body is proportionally stronger than her Jennifer Walter's form, she can further increase her strength by exercising her human body. The stronger and more athletic her human form, the stronger and more athletic her Hulk form.
Superhuman Leap: As She-Hulk, Jennifer is known to have very highly developed leg muscles and thus is capable of leaping great heights and distances. She has shown herself capable of leaping just above 800 feet in height and has covered up to 1,500 feet in a horizontal bound. She covers less ground than her cousin due to her naturally smaller frame.
Superhuman Speed: Thanks to the great muscular strength and development of her leg muscles, Jennifer is capable of running and moving at speeds that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete.
Superhuman Stamina: She-Hulk's highly advanced musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. She can exert herself at peak capacity for about 48 hours before fatigue begins to set in and weaken her.
Superhuman Durability: She-Hulk's body is highly resistant to all forms of conventional injury. Her skin is capable of withstanding extreme pressures, temperatures as high as 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as -195 degrees Fahrenheit, falls from great heights, field-artillery canon shells and powerful energy blasts without sustaining any injury. This is not to say, however, that she is invulnerable and constant assault can weaken her skin just as a human's can be weakened. It is just much harder to do so.
Superhuman Agility: She-Hulk's agility, balance and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even peak human athletes.
Superhuman Reflexes: Jennifer's reflexes are slightly enhanced beyond the levels of most regular humans. Her brain allows her to rapidly assimilate information and change her course of action at a moment's notice. This enables her to change direction even when running at rapid speeds and plot courses of trajectory when plummeting towards the earth - useful as her superhuman leaps are one of her favoured forms of travel.
Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite her body's extremely high resistance to injury, it is possible to injure her. However, she is capable of rapidly regenerating injuries that result in great tissue damage and blood loss within a matter of minutes. However, she is not capable of regenerating missing limbs or organs. She-Hulk's highly efficient metabolism renders her immune to all drugs and toxins as well as total immunity to all known Earthly diseases.
Some Retained Conscience: In recent years, Jennifer's 'Hulk' form has become much more like her cousins, and while she initially retained much of her human conscience when transformed, Jennifer has found current transformations awake an angrier, simpler and more impulsive Hulk, whose conscious often wars with her more human one. Indeed, her emotions and thoughts are for more easily influenced by her 'hulk' form (especially anger and fear, which tend to strengthen her.)
Standard Abilities:
Expert Combatant: She-Hulk is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained by the likes of Captain America since joining the Avengers. Even in her Jennifer Walters form, she possesses sufficient skill in martial arts to dispatch assailants of a human disposition.
Pilot: Jen has acted a pilot for both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
Attorney: Extremely intelligent, Jennifer is a skilled and experienced lawyer. She has won a number of cases and has worked with the likes of Matt Murdock on a number of trials.
Intellectual: Despite her party-girl image, She-Hulk is a bona fide intellectual, attaining an advanced post-baccalaureate degree in law. Jennifer attended UCLA School of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif, a national merit society for top legal minds. Jen also attended Harvard - where she earned her masters in law in order to compliment her juris doctor from UCLA. She has shown great versatility in her legal practice, representing a wide range of defendants - from companies to heroes.
Paraphernalia: N/A
Subject Weaknesses:
Hard To Hurt, Not Impossible: Despite being near physically invulnerable, She-Hulk is not totally impervious to damage. Beings of a similar strength level can still cause quite serious harm and repetitive hits to certain areas of her body can weaken her skin – leading to cuts and bruises common to any normal human (although they do heal at a far faster rate.) These injuries are carried over to her human form should she change back – and thus Jen will often remain ‘Hulked Out’ when hurt in order to better deal with injury.
Mortal: Her resilience and ability to heal quicker than a normal human make She-Hulk incredibly hard to hurt. However, she is not completely invincible. As aforementioned, powerful beings and those stronger than her can still damage her, and thus she can be killed.
Telepathy: While being a physical powerhouse, Jennifer has nothing but her quick wit and self-determination to protect her from psychic and mental assault. As such, it remains an obvious weakness.
Magic: Like most heroes without links to magic, She-Hulk can be affected by a wide range of sorcery, to the extent that certain enchantments and hexes have the ability to negate her powers entirely.
Radiation: Exposure to high doses of certain wavelengths of radiation can sometimes temporarily inhibit or override Jennifer's ability to transform between her hulk and human bodies. The severity the radiation's effect depends on the length of time she has been exposed.
Hulk Smash!: In recent years, Jennifer's 'Hulk' form has become much more like that of Bruce's. While she is stronger and more durable, her 'Hulk' has a more marked simplicity that former transformations didn't impose, and its consciousness isn't always harmoniously linked to Jennifer's own. As such, strong feelings of rage or anger can cause her Hulk form to lose control, no longer listening to Jennifer's demands.
Subject History
Born to Morris and Elaine Banner-Walters, two lifelong citizens of New York City, Jennifer Walters is the first cousin of Robert Bruce Banner, also known as the Incredible Hulk. Despite a five-year age difference, Walters and Banner became as close as brother and sister growing up. But the two saw less of each other as they pursued separate careers upon growing up: Banner medicine; Walters law. She attended UCLA School of Law where she became one of the top legal scholars and earned her Junior Doctor Degree there. She would eventually earn her Masters degree at Harvard Law School. Her work and drive proved enough to not only earn her a degree, but also to initiate her into the 'Order of the Coif' – a national merit society for people deemed to be 'great legal scholars.' From there – she was taken on as an intern at Goodman, Lieber, Burtzberg and Holliway – a nationwide legal firm based in California.
Some time after exposure to gamma radiation triggered Bruce Banner's first transformation into the Hulk, he visited Walters to re-establish contact with his childhood friend. Driving Banner to her Los Angeles home, Walters was shot and seriously wounded during an attempt on her life by Nicholas Trask, an enemy of one of her clients. His cousin rapidly losing blood, Banner improvised an emergency transfusion. But he fled as soon as it was evident Walters would survive, for fear that in the excitement, he would turn into the Hulk.
The effect on Walters of receiving Banner's mutated blood first became clear when Trask's men infiltrated her hospital room, posing as doctors. Walters recognized them, and anger triggered her transformation into a superhumanly strong female version of the Hulk. As She-Hulk, Walters exacted vengeance on Trask's organization.
Jennifer quickly realized that she was unable to control her transformation into She-Hulk, just as Bruce was incapable of controlling the Hulk. Fearing for herself and the safety of others, she had a mental block placed upon her in an attempt to stop her changing form. It was largely ineffectual however, and the effect short lived. Indeed, it seemed its failure aided Jen, as through continued transformation she began retaining her usual levels of intelligence and conscience. She quickly came to appreciate the confidence and assertiveness she could utilize being She-Hulk, at times preferring it to being Jennifer Walters, though she realized the world was better aided by her utilizing both human and hulk forms.
Following a brief solo career working as a streetwise heroine, Jennifer was invited to join the Avengers at the behest of her friend Wasp – the founding female member of the team. It was around the same time that Hawkeye re-joined the Avengers following a long absence. The pair were incredibly clashing personalities and struggled to get along – though it was due to Hawkeyes help Jennifer was able to overcome a temporary mental block that stopped her changing forms. Thanks to his aid, the Avengers were able to overcome the Masters of Evil, Jen instrumental in their take down. From that point on, the pair became much more tolerant of one another and Jen continued working as an Avenger.
She then went on to join the Fantastic Four, agreeing to be a temporary member, replacing her friend Ben Grimm during a leave of absence. During her time with the Four, her most notable mission was attempting to prevent a radiation leak on board a SHIELD Helicarrier. She was able to stop the radiation, but was left unable to transform back into her human form- something that she actively liked the idea of. It was revealed to be another mental block however, put in place by her subconscious, and she would eventually become Jen again.
Upon the Things return to the Fantastic Four, She-Hulk voluntarily left the team in order to rejoin the Avengers and took a job on the District Attorney Blake Tower’s staff. It would, oddly, gain more of her attention than her role as an Avenger, as she only worked with the heroic team when they truly needed her. However, during one of Scarlet Witch’s outbursts, in which a number of Avengers were killed, she used her powers to cause She-Hulk to temporarily use her humanity. Falling into a berserk rage similar to her cousin, she became near unstoppable, rampaging through the Avengers – going as far as to tear Vision in two. Luckily, control was eventually restored, although Jen was left feeling unsure of herself for a long while after.
During the Civil War, Jen registered with the Super-Human Registration Act, though offered legal advice to any her, no matter their allegiance. She went as far as to work as the defence council for Robbie Baldwin. Soon after, she married John Jameson, son of JJ Jameson – though her feelings had been manipulated by Starfox, and thus the marriage didn’t last long. She then joined SHIELD briefly, drafted into a squad to take on Hulk-level threats. However, they were never utilized, and during some down time, Jen initiated a fleeting relationship with Tony Stark.
Fleeting, and never to be repeated.
On finding out that Stark had actually propelled Banner into outer space in order to rid the planet of him, she took it upon herself to fight Iron Man. Despite being stronger and in that moment, the better combatant, Iron Man was able to jab her with an adamantium needle, injecting her with nanotechnology that caused her to lose her ability to change into She-Hulk. Unable to fight crime as her alter ego any longer, Jen returned to work as a lawyer; though during the Hulk’s return to Earth, both Amadeus Cho and Stark restored her powers in order to help her battle the Hulk and aid in the evacuation of New York City. She was one of the few people that tried to verbally convince Hulk to stop his attack, but she was defeated and held captive.
Following the end of World War Hulk, Jen would visit an alternate universe with the Fantastic Four, was impersonated and worked with a skrull named Jazinda, who became a close friend, and joined the Lady Liberators – during which time she first met and battled the Red Hulk. Soon after, she was tasked with finding his identity by Ben Urich. She was taken into custody via AIM during her search, and apparently killed by the Red She-Hulk.
Her body was later found in stasis by Lyra – a younger She-Hulk to whom Jen would become something of a ward. Indeed, following her release and the defeat of the Intelligencia, Jennifer and Lyra moved to New York, the older working for Captain America, and the younger learning how to live a normal life. They became a fierce crime fighting duo. During this period, Jen was able to apologise to a reformed Vision at a charity event. Eventually, Lyra and She-Hulk would go their separate ways, Jen convincing the younger to join the Avengers Academy, hoping that through study, she will further be able to control her powers.
Jen then went on to form a team called the Fearsome Four, consisting of herself, Howard the Duck, Frankenstein’s monster and Nighthawk. Their task was to take down the Man-Thing, who had been driven into an uncontrollable rage. They battled many villains from alternate Earths during their quest, but eventually were able to overcome their fears and defeat the Man-Thing.
The Four then went their separate ways, and Jennifer finally rejoined the Avengers. Shortly after doing so, she became involved in the conflict between the Avengers and X-Men. Sent to watch over the Jean Grey School and its faculty - hoping to deter them from joining Cyclops' more militant team of mutants. During her stay, a number of students provoked the Avengers sent to monitor the site and started a skirmish which saw an angry She-Hulk injure a number of teenagers and push only more mutants to Scott's side. She sat out of much of the conflict from that point onward.
Upon the war's resolution, Jennifer aided the Future Foundation and became a full-time member of A-Force, following on from the discovery of 'Singularity.' Alongside close friend Carol Danvers and the Inhuman queen Medusa, Jennifer battled Anti-Matter and the Countess. The team triumphed over both foes. She-Hulk and several members of A-Force formed part of a group of heroes that intercepted the 'Mad Titan' Thanos when he assaulted the Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Facility in search of the Cosmuc Cube. The heroes were initially at an advantage, since they had become aware of Thanos' attack before it happened due to a vision from the Inhuman, Ulysses Cain. Thanos was defeated, but not before he managed to kill War Machine and critically injure She-Hulk - putting Jennifer into a coma.
Ulysses' vision became a source of discord in the superhuman community, and became the basis of the second 'Civil War.' Jennier eventually recovered from her comatose state to find that Hawkeye had killed Bruce Banner based on one of Ulysses' visions, and had been acquitted on trial. With her cousin's death and with her body still recovering, Jen left the Avengers, took on a far more frosty relationship with Carol Danvers, and returned to being a lawyer. The stress and anger following her defeat at Thanos' hands and the loss of her cousin saw the return of Jennifer's 'Savage Hulk' form - grey in colour and harder to control. She struggled for some time with the 'new' aspect of her Hulk self, and was eventually convinced to meet Florida Mayer, a best-selling author of many self help books, who had been trying to help Jen since her accident.
During these help sessions, Florida gave Walters a special pill to help her find herself. Following an intense experience, imaging herself as a floating head, Jennifer was able to confront her Hulk persona in her subconscious, and went on to imagine meeting Bruce. In doing so, she finally confronted all her fear, rage, and insecurity. When she eventually woke from her experience, she had torn Florida's room apart and was back to her green She-Hulk persona.
When the Final Host of Dark Celestials attacked the Earth, jennifer found herself altered once more. Walters happened to be near the site where Eson the Searcher made landfall and the godly giant telepathically drew her to seek her help. The Celestial imbued Jen with an additional dose of gamma radiation, increasing the power levels of her 'hulked-out' self. The power-up affected She-Hulk's transformation, making her bulkier and causing her to lose access to her full mental faculties, once more causing her to have a more 'savage' persona.
While assisting the Celestials, She-Hulk crossed paths with a group of heroes that became the reformed Avengers following the Dark Celestials' defeat. During this time, Jen became romantically involved with Thor Odinson. The beginning of their relationship was rocky at first, with Jennifer initially believing that Thor had no interest in her normal self and only desired the She-Hulk. She believed this for sometime, until a heart-to-heart with the Norse God revealed otherwise.
Jennifer now remains a member of the Avengers, and is coming to terms with the new 'Hulk' form she inhabits.
Subject Interview
*Sample written from She-Hulk's perspective prior to her new transformation status
The window shattered as her body struck it, the sheer weight of her muscled form travelling at impossible speeds smashing through the thick glass panes despite their being reinforced. Startled cries went up from around the office she crashed into, suited men and women crouching low, huddling behind their desks while combat-suit clad thugs grunted in astonishment, turning toward the source of the sudden disturbance. Using the momentum from her extraordinary jump to carry her into a diving roll, the initial collision having barely slowed her, Jennifer Walters quickly closed the space between her and the nearest goon; nimbly springing to her feet just in front of him and driving her giant fist into his jaw in what could only be described as a monster uppercut. The resulting crack suggested something had been broken or that he was about to swallow a few teeth, before the sheer force of her punch lifted the heavy-set male off his feet, into the air, and then up into the ceiling. He hit it with a hard thud, before dropping back down to the ground face first, sprawled out in a starfish shape, completely and utterly immobile.
Jen winced and made a slight hissing sound, her hands on her hips, looking at the downed male. “Ouch.”
‘AVENGERS!’
Finally having caught up with events, one of the unconscious male’s comrades tried to rally his fellow goons, and spinning to look over her shoulder, Jennifer dived into cover as firearms were raised and pointed at her position – the sound of machine gun fire peppering the area she’d been stood but seconds before accompanying her movement. Avengers plural?! I’m singular! I know I’m big but jeesh, give a girl a break…
And she was big. Towering at 6'7'', muscles bulging nearly as much as the curves on her body, she was a giant by even superhuman standards. Her skin was a brilliant hue of emerald green, her hair near black, worn wild and free. Her costume, a tight fitting body glove that consisted of little more than a vest and shorts only accentuated her build, the bulk in her arms and thighs on show. In short, she made Thor look like a princess, and she wouldn’t have changed it for the world.
Until you get insensitive jerks commenting on your size. Which happened fairly often. Men she fought seemed incapable of noting anything but how large she was, and tended to shout things akin to ‘It’s huge!’ or ‘She’s too big! She won’t go down!’ Luckily, their words weren’t exactly weapons she worried about. Jennifer Walters had thick skin – very think skin. Literally thick. The kind of thick that stopped bullets with little effort. The odd put-down was easily handled and she always got her own back – one powerful right hook at a time. Mr. Plural-Avengers was about to share the same fate. Or...similar and equally painful.
Peeking around the desk she hid behind, not that she’d needed to, she noted one man pull what looked to be a grenade from his belt. Pulling the pin with his thumb, he flicked it hard in her general direction – apparently not so bothered about the fact he ran the risk of exploding the entire floor of the skyscraper. Wow. Bad-mannered and stupid. Really not a winning combination. And she'd prove it by making them abject losers.
Acting quickly, Jen hooked her fingers under the lip of the thick filing cabinet she’d used for cover and with incredible ease, hurled it across the room and into two of the gunmen closest to her, much like a child threw about a toy. Without waiting to see if her ranged attack had been successful, she took two quick steps and swung her hand at the still airborne grenade, swatting at it like a cat pawing a ball of string – though with rather different effects. Upon her open palm colliding with the explosive, its course was completely changed, batted out the remains of the windows she crashed through and on an angle that would take it well into the atmosphere before it exploded. It was quite the strike. Maybe I should have considered a career in baseball.
It was then a single shot rang out, and raising her brows, Jen realised she’d been shot. She felt the bullet hit her and merely bounce off, and reaching over her shoulder, she rubbed the assaulted area. Frowning, her fingers finding skin rather than fabric, she noted they’d penetrated one of her favourite costumes, caressing the small circular hole for a moment before she wheeled to look upon her opponents. The three remaining goons gulped.
The expected two had been incapacitated by the hurled bit of furniture, their groans testament to their discomfort. Smirking, she punched a fist into an open palm, cracking her knuckles. Those opposite her had the sense to take a step backward – though the shooter kept his machine gun raised, trembling finger reaching for the trigger, gun still smoking from the former shot.
Shaking her head and pulling a ‘really?’ face, Jen reached out, gripped the barrel and pushed it upward, metal shrieking and bending in her grip as if it were putty. On releasing it, she motioned to the mangled muzzle as if to say ‘go on, just try to shoot me now.’ Letting out a little gasp of shock upon seeing her handiwork, the man dropped his weapon and raised his hands over his head, surrendering, accepting he’d been beaten. His allies quickly followed suite. With a slight nose wrinkle, Jennifer pirouetted on the spot and swung a right fist hard at the leading man's gut, knocking him back into the other two. The power knocked them back across the room, barrelling across the floor before coming to a halt in what could only be described as a crumpled heap.
So much for the impossible hostage situation. Then, the policeman who’d put the call in for ‘hero aid’ hadn’t been able to leap 30 storeys in a single jump and likely couldn’t withstand gunfire quite as well as she could – just a few of the perks of being She-Hulk. Sgt. Dallas had filled out his uniform nicely, though.
Dusting her hands off, she looked around the room, noting a few of the hostages beginning to stand, casting their eyes around the destruction she’d caused in the very short time she’d been present. Some looked thankful, others mortified. It was a fairly common split. Raising her shoulders in a shrug, she grinned a little. “If anyone’s worried about whose paying for this, I know a guy with more money than sense who owes me a few favours.”
I’m looking at you, Tony Stark.
